A WATER ACCESS TO ALL PROGRAM

GUATEMALA

IMPACTS OF THE WATER CRISIS

Health Risks from Contaminated Water: Many rural communities in Guatemala rely on contaminated water sources, which increases the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and diarrhea. These health issues disproportionately affect children and vulnerable populations, leading to high rates of illness and preventable deaths.

Limited Access to Clean Water:
Access to clean water is a challenge, particularly in rural and indigenous communities. With limited infrastructure, many families must rely on rainwater or distant, unsafe sources. This limits their ability to use clean water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene, further exacerbating health and sanitation issues.

Economic Impact: The water crisis also affects Guatemala’s economy. Families without access to clean water often have to spend more on medical treatments for waterborne diseases or must purchase expensive bottled water. Additionally, water scarcity can hinder agricultural productivity, affecting the livelihoods of many rural communities that depend on farming.

Educational Disruption: Children in communities impacted by the water crisis often miss school due to illness or because they are tasked with walking long distances to collect water. This affects their education and limits future opportunities, perpetuating cycles of poverty.

Social and Economic Implications: The lack of access to clean water affects education, livelihoods, and overall socio-economic development. Women and children, primarily responsible for water collection, often have limited opportunities for education and economic empowerment.
