PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Water Access To All (W.A.T.A.) is building a community-led clean water program in El Salvador by partnering with local leaders and trusted organizations to reach communities often overlooked by larger-scale efforts.

Our work in El Salvador began through an initial visit to the coastal region of La Libertad, where we installed two household water filters as a pilot effort. This first step allowed us to better understand local water access challenges and identify where WATA’s relationship-driven, ambassador-based model can have the greatest impact.

Many small coastal communities in El Salvador, often home to 50–100 families, fall outside the scope of government programs or large NGO distributions. WATA focuses on these communities by working closely with local partners, building trust, and supporting local leadership to create sustainable clean water access over time.

GOALS IN EL SALVADOR

Our goal in El Salvador is to expand access to clean, safe drinking water in small coastal communities while empowering local leaders to champion this work within their own communities.

By starting with pilot installations, building strong partnerships, and identifying local ambassadors, we aim to grow a program that is community-led, scalable, and rooted in long-term relationships.

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

PHASE 1: Relationship Building & Pilot Access

WATA partners with local organizations and community leaders to understand water needs and introduce household water filters through small-scale pilot efforts.

PHASE 2: Community Expansion

Community members, including students, teachers, and local leaders, are trained on proper filter use, cleaning, and maintenance. Select individuals are empowered as WATA Ambassadors, supporting follow-ups, answering questions, and helping expand access within their communities.

PHASE 3: Local Leadership & Ambassador Support

Local leaders are identified and trained as WATA Ambassadors, supporting installations, conducting follow-ups, and serving as long-term points of contact within their communities.

KEYS FOR SUCCESS

Sustainable impact depends on more than providing clean water, it requires people, trust, and long-term commitment. Our work in El Salvador is guided by a few core elements that help ensure responsible, community-led growth:

  • Empowered Local AmbassadorsLocal leaders are identified and supported to assist with filter installations, answer community questions, and serve as long-term points of contact within their communities.

  • Proper Training & Follow-UpFamilies receive hands-on training on filter use and maintenance, with follow-ups to ensure systems are being used correctly and consistently.

  • Consistent Surveys & Data CollectionInstallation and follow-up surveys help us understand how filters are being used, identify challenges early, and guide thoughtful program expansion.

  • Strong Local PartnershipsWorking alongside trusted local organizations and community connectors ensures cultural alignment, trust, and sustainable implementation.

  • Ongoing Support from WATAFrom training materials and planning to continued communication and return visits, WATA remains actively involved as the program grows.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

  • Families gain reliable access to clean, safe drinking water through properly used and maintained filtration systems.

  • Local Ambassadors are empowered to support their communities, answer questions, and lead ongoing clean water efforts.

  • Filters remain in use over time through consistent training, follow-ups, and maintenance support.

  • Data-driven insights from surveys help improve programs, identify challenges early, and guide future expansion.

  • Strong partnerships with schools and community organizations result in trusted, culturally aligned implementation.

  • Communities benefit from sustained support beyond initial setup, strengthening long-term water access systems.

LONG-TERM VISION

WATA’s long-term vision in El Salvador is to support small coastal communities with reliable access to clean, safe drinking water, led by empowered local ambassadors and strengthened through partnerships and systems designed to grow sustainably over time.

TRIP LOG

TRIP 2

DATES: 2/1/26 - 2/8/26

COMMUNITY: LA PERLA

TRIP RECAP

W.A.T.A. returned to the coastal community of La Perla, El Salvador to complete a full community-wide clean water distribution in partnership with local leaders and organizations.

During the visit, W.A.T.A. installed 70 household water filters, providing every family in the community with access to clean, safe drinking water. The distribution was paired with a Water Filter Day, where families gathered for hands-on training, setup, and education to ensure long-term use and follow-up.

The trip coincided with a local youth surf competition, supported by the local surf community and Seek Discomfort, creating a shared space for community connection, celebration, and service. By aligning clean water access with a community event, the program strengthened trust, engagement, and local ownership—laying the foundation for ongoing follow-ups and future expansion in the region.
