PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Water Access To All (W.A.T.A.) works alongside local partners in Thailand to expand access to clean, safe drinking water for displaced, refugee, and hillside communities, while building systems that can be sustained by people living and working within those communities.

In northern Thailand, many refugee and hillside communities rely on untreated water sources and face limited access to infrastructure, healthcare, and long-term support. Ongoing regional conflict and displacement have further increased the need for reliable household water treatment solutions that can be maintained locally.

W.A.T.A.’s work in Thailand began through a partnership with Safe Water for Every Child, an organization working in northern Thailand’s hillside regions. Through this partnership and a joint training, W.A.T.A. was able to visit local communities, assess needs, and establish a trusted local connection that allowed the program to begin responsibly.

Rather than launching a large distribution immediately, W.A.T.A. is taking a relationship-driven, ambassador-led approach, prioritizing trust, local leadership, and long-term sustainability from the start.

GOALS IN THAILAND

Our goal in Thailand is to support refugee and displaced communities with access to clean, safe drinking water while empowering local leaders to sustain and grow this work over time.

Beginning with a small number of installations in northern Thailand, W.A.T.A. is building a foundation for long-term, community-led impact. By pairing clean water access with local leadership and ongoing support, the program aims to responsibly expand within refugee camps and nearby hillside communities as capacity and funding allow.

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

PHASE 1: Community Partnership & Initial Access

W.A.T.A. partners with established local organizations in northern Thailand to identify clean water needs within refugee and hillside communities and introduce household water filtration systems.

The Thailand program began through a partnership with Safe Water for Every Child, which provided local access, training, and community context. Through this partnership, W.A.T.A. was able to visit hillside communities, assess needs, and establish a trusted local connection within a refugee camp.

Initial access focused on small, targeted installations to meet immediate needs while building trust and understanding local conditions. Early distributions prioritized a local school and families within the refugee camp, ensuring water access was introduced responsibly and with community buy-in.

PHASE 2: Local Leadership & Training

Community leadership is central to W.A.T.A.’s approach in Thailand. A community member living within the refugee camp was trained and empowered as W.A.T.A.’s first local ambassador.

This ambassador leads filter installations, supports families with setup and basic maintenance, and serves as the primary local point of contact. Training focuses on proper filter use, cleaning, and long-term care, adapted to the realities of life in displaced and resource-limited settings.

As the program grows, additional community members may be trained to support follow-ups and expand access beyond the initial households.

PHASE 3: Long-Term Support & System Strengthening

As access expands, W.A.T.A. will continue working with partners and local leadership to strengthen long-term water access systems within refugee and hillside communities.

This phase includes ongoing monitoring, follow-ups, and support for ambassadors, as well as exploring complementary solutions such as safe water storage practices, hygiene education, and solar lighting partnerships where appropriate. Growth will be guided by community readiness and available resources rather than fixed distribution targets.

KEYS FOR SUCCESS

Sustainable impact in Thailand depends on more than providing clean water, it requires trust, local leadership, and long-term support. The program is guided by the following core elements:

Empowered Local Ambassadors

Community members living within the refugee camp are trained and supported to lead installations, answer questions, and provide continuity beyond short-term visits.

Context-Specific Training & Follow-Up

Training is adapted to local conditions, ensuring filters are used correctly and maintained despite limited infrastructure and resources.

Responsible, Phased Growth

Expansion is gradual and intentional, allowing systems, leadership, and funding to develop together.

Strong Local Partnerships

Working alongside organizations already embedded in the region ensures cultural understanding, access, and trust.

Ongoing Support from W.A.T.A.

W.A.T.A. remains actively involved through training materials, communication, and follow-up to support local leaders over time.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

  • Hillside families gain reliable access to safe drinking water.

  • A local ambassador is empowered to lead clean water efforts within their own community.

  • Waterborne illness risks are reduced in settings with limited healthcare access.

  • Schools and families benefit from improved health and reduced time spent treating water.

  • A responsible, ambassador-led model is established for future expansion in northern Thailand.

LONG-TERM VISION

W.A.T.A.’s long-term vision in Thailand is to support refugee and displaced communities with sustained access to clean water through empowered local leaders and trusted partnerships. As the program grows, W.A.T.A. aims to expand support within refugee camps and nearby communities while maintaining a model that prioritizes accountability, local ownership, and long-term impact over one-time intervention.

TRIP LOG

TRIP 1

DATES: 10/26/25- 10/31/25

COMMUNITY: NORTHERN HILLSIDES

TRIP RECAP

W.A.T.A.’s visit to Thailand marked the start of our early-stage program in the country. While attending a water and sanitation training hosted by Safe Water for Every Child, we visited northern hillside communities, assessed clean water needs, and built relationships with local partners working in the region.

During the trip, W.A.T.A. installed a Sawyer water filter at a local school and donated ten filters for families living in a nearby refugee camp. A community member living within the camp was trained and empowered as W.A.T.A.’s first local ambassador, laying the groundwork for an ambassador-led, community-driven program moving forward.
